Movement protecting men’s rights launched

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: Save Indian Family Movement, an organisation focusing on abuse of women-centric laws against men, advocating gender-neutral laws and amendments to the existing laws, has launched its Coimbatore Chapter.

Convenors of the Save Indian Family Movement, Suresh Ram and M.P. Kalaiselvan (Chennai), Manoj David (Bangalore) and G. Prakash (Coimbatore) addressed journalists at Coimbatore on Friday.

They pointed out that laws aimed at protecting women, such as Sec 498 A of Indian Penal Code, Dowry Prohibition Act and Prevention of Domestic Violence Act, had been largely misused against men and this had affected the Indian family system.

Adverting to the suicide statistics of 2005 and 2006, they pointed out that in 2005, 52,483 husbands committed suicide while the number was 28,188 for wives and in 2006, 55,452 husbands committed suicide as against 29,869 suicides by wives.

In the event of the death of a married woman, the husband and his family members were subjected to prolonged legal trails. Such laws could never be a remedy for the sufferings of women and arming them with ‘terrorising legal weapons’ only led to retribution.

They dubbed the cited legal provisions as ‘draconian women-centric laws’. More than 98 per cent of men faced domestic violence at the hands of their wives and in-laws in the form of verbal abuse, physical abuse, economic exploitation, cheating, infidelity and harassment, but there was no law to provide solace to them.

They said that laws needed to be gender neutral. Women-centric laws sought compensation for women in the event of a divorce even when the woman was a bread winner and saw fathers as incapable of bringing up children.

They demanded a separate Ministry for Men’s Welfare, gender equal laws, besides amendments to legal provisions to tone down these legislations.
